Owing to our excellant location, we ran into Avignon yesterday. We needed to make sure we could find the TGV (very fast train) station as we have friends arriving on Wednesday to spend a few days with us. Turns out it is only 20 minutes from home. We then went into the old town of Avignon and I attempted to do some dress shopping but didn't have any luck. All the fashions seemed appropriate for those under 20! The place, however, was really hopping. There is a MAJOR theatre festival in Avignon for 3 weeks in July. The performers all roam the streets handing out flyers advertisting their shows. There were also alot of street performers and tons of people. We had a nice dinner - which cost less than our 'formidable sodas'. The waitress asked if we wanted the small soda or the large and of course we said large - little did we realize it would cost more than $10 and require two hands to pick up.
Avignon is the home to the Papal Palace when the Catholic popes located themselves for a 100 years or so around 1300. They got very corrupt and eventually Rome took back being the home of the pope, but not until they had both had popes for about 40 years, excommunicating each other. We didn't go into the Palace - saving that for another day.
It is neat to have Avignon so close-by. It is a very lively city. We will go there again, I am sure.
